Hi, I’m Leia! I recently graduated from Arts University Bournemouth with a degree in Visual Communication and I am now the new Junior Motion Designer at Bright Blue Day! If you would have told me three years ago that this is where 24 year old Leia would end up, I wouldn’t have believed you (let alone believe that I have a whole-ass degree).
For a long time I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, what job I wanted, where I wanted to live, or even the kind of person I wanted to be. Then COVID hit. And it made me realise, just like a lot of others, I wanted something more than my current job - stacking shelves and slowly beginning to resent my life.
Design had always been something I was interested in. From a young age I used to draw a lot of digital art and my teenage fangirl years introduced me to the likes of Photoshop and Premiere Pro (so truly I have One Direction to thank for my career).
But back then I didn’t realise a career in design existed, and was made to feel like I was just a silly little girl obsessing over a boyband. So, I ended up turning my attention to Make-up, specifically SFX, which is what I then went on to study in college, but ended up losing my love for it shortly after.
As dreadful as COVID was, I’m thankful it gave me the push I needed to pursue something with my life, something that I am passionate about. It wasn’t until I was at university that Motion Design was a specialism that I became interested in. Which proves that with just a little time and dedication you really can get anywhere if you put your mind to it, under my fortunate circumstances.
Although these past couple of weeks have been pretty mental, from handing in my Final Major Project, helping with the Grad Show, securing and starting a new job, actually graduating and trying to find somewhere to live during this whole process, I would not change it one bit. If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I like a challenge, I want to push myself and I know that the next couple of months will definitely change me completely.
Bright Blue Day has been an amazing transition from education into real-life work, with a supportive network and buzzing atmosphere. There hasn’t been a dull day since I’ve started (considering my first day was the summer party, there was a lot to live up to). Like I said at the beginning, if you had asked 21 year old Leia where she would be at 24 she wouldn’t have an answer, but asking 24 year old Leia where she thinks she’ll be at 27, I can honestly tell you that I hope she is happy, thriving and continuing to grow within bbd.
Here’s to hoping I pass probation xx
